Anderson gets closer

Top-ranked Kevin Anderson breezed through to quarter-finals of the South African Open in Johannesburg on Thursday and will be one of three South Africans in quarter-final action on Friday.

Anderson edges ever closer to the first ATP title of his career with a straight sets 6-2 6-4 win over Israel’s Dudi Sela.

The lanky Anderson sent down 13 aces against Sela and will now meet Slovakia’s Karo Beck in the quarters. And Anderson, ranked at 59th on the ATP rankings list will no doubt fancy his chances against Beck, currently ranked No100 in the world. It was also fourth-seeded Anderson’s first win in three matches against Sela.

Not going any further in the Montecasino tournament was Fritz Wolmarans who went down 7-6 6-3 to Canadian surprise package Frank Dancevic.

In other quarter-finals scheduled our SA duo of Izak van der Merwe and Rik de Voest will both be savouring their first ATP quarter-finals action. Van der Merwe comes up against Germany’s Simon Greul while De Voest takes on Somdev Devvarman of India.
