Dashing Dean wins mile
- Updated: December 18, 2010
Like father, like son! Dean Brummer finished the 2010 Yellow Pages Summer Series  on a winning note as he held on to beat race favourite Samson Ngoepe in a thrilling mile event at the Tygerberg Athletics Club track in Parow, near Cape Town on Saturday evening.
Brummer — son of Deon Brummer, the legendary SA middle distance star of the 1980s and 1990s –┬á produced a quality turn of pace with 600 metres to go to position himself perfectly to keep ahead in the closing stages of the event.
ÔÇ£I knew that guys like Samson Ngoepe and Maties’ Jacques Pretorius have very strong kick finishes, so I had to time my race to perfection,ÔÇØ said Brummer, after taking line honours in 4min 07.94sec. Ngoepe was next best in 4:11.12, followed by Duane Fortuin (4:14.81).
While the Yellow Pages’ incentive prize of R5000 for the first mile athlete to run under four minutes in the mile event held in Stellenbosch, Oudtshoorn, Port Elizabeth and Parow was not claimed, Athletics SA and the sponsor did well to bring the famous 1609-metre event back into the hearts of SA athletics fans.
Maties hurdles star Cornel Fredericks showed why he is ranked as the 16th best 400m hurdles athletes in the world, in taking the 300m hurdles honours in a meeting record time of 35.15sec.
National 100 and 200m senior champion Cindy Stewart did as well as she could in the windy conditions, winning the 60 and 150m in 7.45 and 17.85 respectively. Stewart and Fredericks were named as the respective female and male Yellow Pages Summer Series Athlete of the Series.
