Wins for Erhardt, Andrea

Erhardt Wolfaardt and Andrea Steyn made it back-to-back victories in the third BSG/Energade triathlon sprint series race in Germiston on Sunday.

First out of the water in the 600-metre swim was Jeff Norton (7min 21sec), followed by Abrahm Louw (7:23), Erhardt Wolfaardt (7:28) and then a group of five athletes, including Claude Eksteen and Hendrik De Villiers.

De Villiers had a tough task, having done some ÔÇ£extensive swimming mileageÔÇØ in training that week, and he was moving to Stellenbosch. But the former fourth-placed finisher at a world championship is nothing if not a gutsy performer. And it showed on the 20km bike leg held around Germiston Lake. De Villiers, Eksteen and Michael Davidson were only beaten time wise on the bike by Richard Murray, but the lead was not enough to hold off the running of last week’s winner Erhard Wolfaardt.

Wolfaardt was the only athlete to break 17min for the 5km run and that was enough for the win. He covered the distance in 16:51 with Eksteen 25 seconds adrift for second. Abrahm Louw rounded off the podium.

The women’s race went very much along the lines as the previous week, with Andrea Steyn needing to catch Lucie Zelenkova, after she had once again put in the fastest swim of the day amongst the women. Zelenkova was out of the water in under nine minutes (8:36), with only Carlyn Fischer being able to break the nine minute barrier (8:49). Carla Van Huysteen, Andrea Steyn, and Riana De Lange coming out together (9:04, 9:07 and 9:09 respectively) and needing to a bit of work on the bike.

Steyn did not finish sixth at the World Duathlon Championships for nothing, and her prowess on the bike came to the fore as she flew through the 20km course in 37min and 10sec, with De Lange helping with the work and all but eliminating the time lost on the swim.

Once on the run though, there was only one athlete in it, as Steyn powered away for her second consecutive win, and in the absence of the injured Kate Roberts, looks set to once again dominate the series.

Steyn needed 1:06;05 for the 600m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, finishing just under a minute ahead of the fast improving Carlyn Fischer. Riana de Lange finished third.
