Roxanne, Pietie give SA win

South Africa’s men’s and women’s hockey teams continued their preparations for the Commonwealth Games with another practice match each here on Friday. The women’s team beat New Zealand, the men’s team lost to India.

Both matches were played again under predictably warm skies but for the women, whose game against the Kiwis started around 9.15am, it wasn’t as hot as the day before when on-field temperatures soared into the 40s deg C.

South Africa’s men’s team, who had drawn 2-2 in their match against Pakistan on Thursday, were narrowly beaten by home country India, 2-1 in what was also only the second game the Proteas had played as a group since the World Cup.

Lindsey Wright, the women’s team assistant coach, was all smiles after the 2-0 victory over New Zealand, who occupy a higher ranking on the world ladder. ÔÇ£We are making strides and building on what we are doing. The game went very well and the result is a true reflection of play,ÔÇØ she said.

Striker Roxanne Turner had opened the scoring in the first half and after the interval veteran Pietie Coetzee added to her international goal tally with the second of the match.

Afterwards, Turner was struggling a bit with a back injury, but it is hoped that she will recover in time to play Trinidad and Tobago in South Africa’s first pool game on Monday.
