Wright shows the way

Nine more Team SA swimmers went through to finals in their events at Wednesday’s heats at the IPC swimming world championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Leading the charge was Challis Wright who set a South African record in the 100-metre breaststroke heats (S14 category). Wright ended second in the heat with a national mark of 1min 12.12sec.

A total of 11 swimmers were in morning action while Natalie Du Toit and Emily Gray contest the straight final in the 400m freestyle and Marike Naude (in the 50m freestyle, S13) later on Wednesday.

Three of the 11 swimmers set personal bests in the heats. Shark attack victim Achmat Hassiem swam 4:27.17 for fourth spot in the 400m freestyle (S10), Shireen Sapiro clocked 5:05.88, also in the S10 400m freestyle for seventh spot, and Hendri Herbst touched the wall in 27.77 for ninth spot in the 50m freestyle.
