SA team for Botswana

Triple jump sensation Valentina da Rocha and promising sprinter Rudolf Erasmus have been included in a 31-strong SA youth team that will be in action in the Southern Region Youth Championships in Gabarone, Botswana on May 15-16.
Da Rocha, produced a fabulous leap of 12.77 metres at the Yellow Pages SA Youth and Junior Track and Field Championships held in Germiston earlier this month ÔÇô a new national under-19 record, while Erasmus, 16, showed impressive speed on the Germiston Stadium tartan surface taking the 100 and 200 metres youth titles in 10.5 seconds and 21.15 respectively.
In congratulating the athletes on being selected to the national youth team, Athletics South Africa’s administrator Ray Mali said: ÔÇ£ASA is pleased to offer this opportunity of competition to our country’s youth athletes, which forms a part of the qualification process for places in the African team at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games that will be held in Singapore from August 14-26.ÔÇØ
The 2010 Southern Region Championships is one of five regional championships that will take place on the continent of Africa during the same period, with other events being held in Khartoum, Sudan; Yaound├®, Cameroon; Dakar, Senegal and Algiers, Algiers.
The African team to the 2010 Youth Olympic Games will be selected by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) from the performances set at the five regional championships.
