Roberts sixth in Sydney
- Updated: April 12, 2010
Training in Australia with some of the world’s best triathletes for the past two years is clearly paying dividends for Kate Roberts as she finished sixth in round one of the Dextro Energy Triathlon ITU World Championship Series in Sydney on Sunday.
Roberts had finished fourth in the World Cup race in Mooloolaba in late March and this clearly gave her the confidence to stick with the big guns at the first of the seven-leg World Championship Series in Sydney on Sunday.
Roberts had a phenomenal race, only dropping of the pace slightly in the 10km run to finish 30 seconds off the surprise winner Barbara Riveros Diaz of Chile.
The race came down to a sprint finish between Diaz and New Zealand’s Andrea Hewitt, with both recording the same finish time of 2hr 04min 19sec. Australia’s Emma Moffit was one-second behind, showing just how tight it was for the podium.
The battle for fifth was also extremely tight. Roberts and training partner Lisa Norden (No 2 world ranking at the end of last year) battled to the line with the Swedish athlete just a second ahead of Roberts.
In December 2008, Kate Roberts packed her bags for Australia for the first time after a long chat with coach Libby Burrel.
Last year was to be a make or break year for Roberts regarding her triathlon career.
Clearly the move has paid off already. Training with some of the best triathletes in the world like Norden, American Sarah Groff ÔÇô┬á and one of the best swimmers/cyclists on the world triathlon circuit; Vendula Frintova from Czech Republic and the current World Duathlon Champion Riveros Diaz from Chile and one of the best runners on the world triathlon circuit; Vicky Holland ÔÇô from Great Britain and fourth last year at the World Under-23 Championships, Zita Szabo – from Hungary and an Olympian and Jenna Shoemaker ÔÇô from America); is clearly paying off as this is a better start to the season than in 2009.
Roberts will now be heading back home and then off to Europe in June for her final preparations for the World Championship Series races and the World Championships in September.
At the Singapore Premium Cup, also at the weekend, Wikus Weber finished 11th with Richard Murray 14th and Theo Blignaut 15th with Murray lamenting his weakness in the swim.
