South Africa ended the group stage of their Hero Honda World Cup men’s hockey tournament with a 3-3 draw against India in New Delhi, India on Monday.

This meant that India took fourth spot in the table and relegated Pakistan to sixth spot in Group B.

Favourites Australia sweated to a 2-1 victory over Pakistan to claim their spot in the semi-finals.

European champions, England, unbeaten in their previous four matches in the tournament, went down 2-0 to 2008 Olympic silver-medallists Spain.

In the SA-India game Lloyd Norris-Jones put South Africa 1-0 up in the seventh minute but Sarvanjit Singh and Diwakar Ram then netted in quick succesion to put the hosts 2-1 up at halftime.

South Africa then reduced the deficit through 3-2 Justin Reid-Ross and captain Austin Smith, before Shivendra Singh equalised for India four minutes from the end.

India and South Africa both ended with four points, but the hosts had a better goal difference of minus-four and compared to the South Africans’ minus-15.

South Africa lost their first three games to Spain, England and Australia before beating Pakistan 4-3 on Saturday.

The two semi-final spots from group A will be decided after Tuesday’s last round with four teams — the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea and New Zealand — still in the fray.
