Our Deaflympics star Terence Parkin has been named 2009 Widex Sportsman of the year by the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf Selections Commission.

The international ballot was conducted electronically and Belarus’s Aksana Petrushenka was named as Sportswoman of the year.

The versatile Parkin, 29, won seven gold medals for South Africa in the pool at the recent Deaflympics in Taipei, Taiwan as well as a bronze medal in the road cycling event.

On top of this Parkin broke 12 world records during 2009. His Deaflympic gold medals were: 50 metres breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, 400m Individual Medley, 200m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m Individual Medley and 1,500m freestyle.

Petrushenka, 25, was also a star at the Deaflympics. She won four gold, one silver and a bronze in the pool, in the process, setting five Games and world records.

Well done, Terence. Further to this, we also have a 15 years old Peggy de Villiers from Cape Town who won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in Swimming at the same Deaflympics this year. She also broke a few World records. All eyes will be on her as we march to the 2013 Deaflympics in Athens.
