Erhardt, Kate end on winning note
- Updated: December 8, 2009
Erhardt Wolfaardt repeated his performance from 2008 in the BSG/Energade Sprint Triathlon Series at Vanderbijlpark when he won the final event of the Series to clinch victory in six of the seven races and Kate Roberts took the honours in the final women’s race of the series.
Strong swimmers Henry Schoeman and Jeff Norton were clearly a cut above the rest in the 600 metre swim with Schoeman hitting dry land first after only 7min 37sec in the water. Norton was out 10sec later with Wolfaardt rounding out the top three needing 7:54 for the swim.
Wolfaardt proceeded to chase down Norton and Schoeman on the 20km cycle with Schoeman and Wolfaardt coming into Transition Two together after Wolfaardt made up the 17sec deficit from the swim. Claude Eksteen, who clocked 8:16 for the swim, screamed to a 27:57 cycle leg to be on the run with the leaders. The effort on the cycle clearly cost him though, as he was not able to mount a challenge on the 5km run.
Wolfaardt was never challenged on the 5km run with a clocking of 16:29 for an overall time of 52:43 to win his sixth of seven BSG/Energade Races and the overall series by four points with a total of 80. Second across the line was Sander Berk (53:07) with Eksteen coming in third in 53:19. That is also the order in which they finished on the overall points rankings with Berk on 76 and Eksteen on 72.
Kate Roberts won her second BSG/Energade triathlon after settling for second behind Andrea Steyn five times. Roberts opened a 44sec lead on the 600m swim (8:49) over Steyn (9:33) which proved to be decisive. Steyn was able to claw back 11sec on the 20km bike but lost ground on the run again. Roberts clocked 32:13 for the bike to Steyn’s 32:02. On the 5km run though Roberts needed only 18min 44sec to the 19:10 of Andrea Steyn.
Continuing her impressive performances to finish third overall just ahead of Zelenkowa on the day, was first junior Carlyn Fisher.
