Nhlapo backs big BMX event

He won’t be among the daredevils doing their stuff in Pietermaritzburg this weekend, but South African BMX racing star, Sifiso Nhlapo, has thrown his weight behind the upcoming round of the International Cycling Union BMX Supercross World Cup, presented by Swatch.

The three-day event, from August 20ÔÇô22, has also been named as the first event for which London 2012 Olympic Games qualifying points can be scored, ensuring that many of the world’s top racers will be in action.

ÔÇ£We have the BMX World Championships in Pietermaritzburg next year and in order to build support and interest, this round of the World Cup is extremely important,ÔÇØ said Nhlapo from his home in Johannesburg, where he is convalescing after a serious crash in Norway, which left him with a fractured neck,

ÔÇ£I feel very privileged to have such high profile BMX events in my own country and even though I can’t race the World Cup event this year, I will do all I can to support the event and I definitely plan to be racing the 2010 World Champs! BMX in particular and cycling in general still has plenty of growth potential in Africa and I want these events to be a huge success.ÔÇØ

Nhlapo is one of the world’s top BMX racers. He claimed the bronze medal at the 2008 World Championships, reached the final at the Beijing Olympic Games, and, at the time of his crash in late June was ranked No 1 in Europe and No 4 in the world. He may require more surgery, but it is expected to make a full recovery.

The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup will be held at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg on a purpose-built temporary track, similar to the one used at the Beijing Olympic Games last year.
