Open hopes in 5km event

Swim stars Natalie du Toit, Dominique Dryding, Chad Ho and Daniel Marais┬áwill carry SA’s hopes into the 5km open water swimming competition at the┬á13th FINA World Championships in Ostia, Italy on Tuesday.┬á
The 5km competition was postponed from Saturday, after world aquatics body FINA ruled that the foul weather conditions in Ostia, were not conducive to allow for a safe, competitive competition.

The 10km competition, which is likely to be more suitable to Du Toit – who┬ácarried the SA flag into the opening ceremony of the world aquatics┬áshowpiece in Rome on Saturday – and Ho in particular, will take place on┬áWednesday.┬á

Meanwhile, the SA men’s water polo team found themselves on the received end┬áof a rampant German aquatics onslaught, as the South Africans were outplayed┬á14-4 in the opening Group A fixture, on the second day of the 13th FINA┬áWorld Championships in Rome today.┬á

Woods, Pierre le Roux, Etienne le Roux and Kevin O’Brien got on to the┬áscore-sheet for SA, who will face Canada on Wednesday, in their next group┬áfixture.┬á

The SA women’s team return to the waters tomorrow, in a Group C fixture┬áagainst Australia.
