Liss to make a splash

Port Elizabeth sensation Jessica Liss has her sights set on representing SA at the FINA World Championships this year and will be looking to post a qualifying time in the 200m breaststroke when the Telkom SA National Championships, take place at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre in Durban from April 14-19.
Liss, 13, from Collegiate High School, who narrowly missed out on qualifying
for the SA team for last year’s Beijing Olympics, has a 200m┬ábreaststroke best of 2 min 28.55 and will need to swim close to this time in┬áorder to dip under the World Championship qualifying mark of 2:28.71.┬á

ÔÇ£Liss has enormous respect for the SA team swimmers,ÔÇØ said her coach Garreth┬á

KwaZulu-Natal’s Kathryn Meaklim is also expected to take part in the 200m breaststroke, and her presence could well help Liss towards a┬áqualifying time. She (Liss) isn’t often challenged in the 200m┬ábreaststroke, so it will be interesting to see how she will do when she is┬ápushed by top swimmers like Meaklim.┬á

Liss recently won 6 gold medals at the Telkom SA Level 03 (under 18) Age Group Championships held in Sasolburg.

With the likes of the highly experienced Mandy Loots set to be challenging for further medals in the butterfly and individual medley events where she will be tested by African 200m butterfly record-holder Meaklim, swimming enthusiasts are in for a week of high quality aquatics.

Add in Western Province’s 200m individual medley record-holder Jessica┬áPengelly and backstroke star Chanelle van Wyk and the Kings Park Aquatics┬áCentre is the place to be next week.
